About Orkney Angora

When you buy from Orkney Angora, you’re supporting a small, family-run business on one of Orkney’s most northerly isles. Founded in 1982 by William and Elizabeth Sichel from the ruins of a derelict croft, the business is now run by Tracy Ranger from her smallholding on Sanday—remaining a truly personal operation.

Originally angora farmers themselves, the Sichels developed humane, stress-free shearing methods that continue to guide Orkney Angora’s sourcing. Their trusted spinner in China works exclusively with Feixian Angora Farm, personally inspected by William and found to exceed DEFRA welfare standards.

All dyeing and winding are powered by Orkney’s clean, wind-generated energy—reflecting the company’s commitment to ethical, sustainable production.

Orkney Angora encourages customers to ask about the source of their angora and to buy only from responsible producers. The company believes the future of the industry depends on working with farmers around the world to produce angora ethically—and remains dedicated to doing exactly that.
